SAC Club Tournament: Pam Duffin takes women's singles trophy; Victoria & Raphael win mixed doubles

SAC's tennis tournament finished on Saturday in sweltering heat with Pam Duffin taking the Women's Singles trophy by beating Julie Luc 6-2, 6-0 in a score which didn't reflect the long rallies and several close games as Julie tried to counter her opponent's super slices and precision play honed after years on the squash court.

In the mixed doubles, Victoria Migliore and Raphael Imbert had to bring out some of their best volleying and topspin drives in a 6-2, 6-4 win to overcome Clotilde Paquier's famously unflappable defensive play and Arnaud Paquier's crunching forehands.

In the men's singles, it was Raphael again a winner, resisting a second-set comeback to see off Guilhem Effroy 6-1, 6-4.

For the men's doubles, with Sean Lafleur unable to play on Saturday - sparing his partner Raphael a third final -- the winners were Melvin Cooke and Philippe Vignal. They proved worthy champions, winning an exhibition match against Raphael and Matthew Curtin 1-6, 6-2, 6-0 as the whiff of White Dinner cocktails and BBQ smoke drifted over Court number 2.

A huge thanks to Christine Butterworth and Victoria for organising the tournament, arranging the draw and chasing up results and matches.

And a big thank you to all who took part.

We hope to see many of you on the court for September's Open Tournament at SAC (see website for details soon) and in next year's tournament. What good occasions for all the runners-up to make use of their prizes of a free lesson with the coaches of Tennis Academy at SAC and plot their revenge!
