This form of governance is also very much consistent with the spirit of "shared second home". The Club is precisely that. We have all banded together so that we have the combined resources to create the Club that we want. If we think the Club needs more resources to improve it, it is up to us to decide to allocate them. If we do not like the Rules it is up to us to change them. There is no "owner" or shareholder who is maximising profits. This does not, of course, mean that Management is doing a great job. They may or may not be. What is does mean is that we, as Members, are the ones who can control that, get involved in Management, have our say, etc.
The primary forum is the AGM ... which will be held in person at the Club this Sunday. It would be great to see as many voting Members (all Full, Social, Young Adult and Student Members over 18, including Institutional Members; Single Sport and Country are not eligible to vote) in the room as possible. This is your opportunity to meet (if you do not know them) and question the Management Committee, share your point of view and learn what you need to make an informed voting choice in the electronic vote which will be set up in the days following the meeting. It is also a great way to show your support for the volunteers who help to keep things running (Section Heads, Management Committee, ad hoc volunteers).
The Draft Agenda, the Treasurer's Reports (2025 accounts and 2026 and 2027 budgets) and the Draft Minutes from 2025 have already been shared, either by mail or posting in the Clubhouse. With this notice you will also find the Management Committee presentation. It deliberately covers similar information each year, in a similar format, so it is easier to read:
-
Financial information
-
Debt levels and debt repayments
-
How much cash we are generating (essentially revenue minus operating costs, which we can use to pay down debt, or invest, or build up our bank balance)
-
Profit and loss
-
-
How the Bar and Restaurant is doing (as a measure of activity at the Club)
-
Reflections on social life at the Club
-
The physical condition of the Club: what has been done and at what cost? What is on the horizon to 2030
-
How many Members are in our Club?
-
What Management proposes to focus on to 2030
-
The implied Motions (including subscriptions for the coming year).
In particular, there will be an important discussion on if we want to introduce a new sport, padel, with a vote that will guide Management as they prepare a final proposal following the AGM, including financing.
There will also be a vote on if we want to establish a "reserve fund" as a contingency against future surprises (such as Covid, or any other adverse shock).
You are all enthusiastically invited to our AGM. Please join us to discuss our Club and perhaps stay for a little while at our Bar afterwards.
